Science of Spirituality

By Sant Rajinder Singh Ji Maharaj

Science has always sought to explain the unexplainable, solve the unsolvable, and know the unknowable. Scientists devote themselves to finding answers to the mysteries of life. The human thirst for knowledge has driven people to explore all aspects of existence to know why and how everything came to be.

Humans are not content to merely gaze at the stars; they want to fly amidst the stars to seek answers of who and what they are, and how they came to be. Not content to swim in the ocean, they want to dive to its depths and find out what lies beneath. It is not enough for human beings to look into a mirror to see themselves; they want to explore not only every cell of the body, but they want to learn the genetic code that is the “instruction manual,” explaining why every part of the body has come to be, why the body looks and functions as it does.

Science Is Driven by Curiosity to Find Answers to What, Why, and How

Science is driven by the innate curiosity of every human being to find answers to the questions of what, why, and how.

Not content to gaze at the planets and stars, humans devised a way to walk on the moon, and send satellites to photograph the outer planets and furthest reaches of our galaxies. They even built Mars rovers on that distant planet to study the soil and rocks for proof of water and life. Who could imagine that a group of people could guide a spacecraft to land safely on another planet such as Mars, unfold two science labs the size of golf carts, and even repair them while sitting in a lab on earth? Is it not truly remarkable what humans can do when they set their mind to something?

People have mapped the entire genetic code for human life, explaining why we look as we do, and what the slight differences among us are. It is fascinating that researchers claim that according to various studies on the human genome, anywhere between over 99% to 99.9% of all human beings are the same, and there is only between less than .1% to 1% differences among us, which accounts for minor variations such as hair color, eye color, skin color, size, and shape.

Similar advances have occurred in all other fields of endeavor. When we think about all the scientific research and advances that have driven humanity since the dawn of human history, we find at the heart of all these advances is the desire to answer several burning questions: who are we, what are we, why are we here, how did we get here, and where do we go when our physical existence ends. We seek and have found partial answers through biology, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geology, quantum physics, and the sub-branches of each of these fields.

Spirituality—a Science that Seeks to Find Answers of Who We Are

What few people realize is that these same questions are at the heart of another branch of science, known as spirituality. Spirituality is itself a science that seeks to uncover the same answers as traditional scientists seek to uncover. Spirituality seeks to find the answers of who we are, why are we here, where did we come from, and where do we go after this physical existence ends.

Spirituality in its truest sense is a scientific study in which we seek to discover the existence of the powers that brought all known matter, planets, earth, people, animals, chemicals, atoms, quarks, and genes into existence.

Scientists in the major fields of chemistry, biology, astronomy, geology, and physics have been able to discover or theorize what matter is what we are physically comprised of, but they are unable to explain how and why we and this physical universe got here. Spirituality seeks to answer these questions. It begins with the theory that there was some power that brought everything into being. However, spirituality, like science, is not content with theory alone; it seeks proof that can be replicated.

Spirituality Is Studied Using the Scientific Method

Spirituality is studied in the same fashion as science is studied. In the scientific method, we begin with a hypothesis. Next, we make a plan of the procedure and/or materials we want to use to test the hypothesis. Then, we follow that plan exactly and record the data or findings. When complete, we analyze the data and report on the results. Was our hypothesis correct or incorrect? The data either proves or disproves our hypothesis. We prove our hypothesis when we can replicate the results under the same conditions.

This methodology can be used to study spirituality. Spirituality is not based on blind belief; it can be verified through the scientific method. Spirituality is the personal testing of the hypothesis that there is a higher power within us, and that power can be experienced.

The basis of science is to prove a hypothesis for ourselves. The science of spirituality asks that we prove it for ourselves. A scientist of spirituality will provide you the methodology that has worked for him or her and ask you to test it for yourself. It is only through testing the hypothesis within the laboratory of our own human form that we can see the proof for our self. What is the methodology they advocate? It is the process of inversion.

Right now, most of our attention is going outward to the world outside and the body. We are aware of the world and our body through the faculty of our attention. Our attention is drawn by the five senses into the world outside and to our body. We are pulled by our senses into the world of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. Through these senses we perceive the world and our physical body.

If we withdraw our senses to a point within us, known as the seat of our soul or our awareness, located between and behind the two eyebrows, our attention will focus there. When all our attention is concentrated at this still point, we will be able to see the inner light and hear the inner sound. Through further concentration on the inner light and sound, the conscious part of ourselves will experience a higher frequency of light and sound. We will experience light and sound that is far more ethereal than what we see and hear in this physical world. We will enter a world of light and sound unimaginable to us.

Meditation in Science of Spirituality

This method of meditation is simple. In meditation in Science of Spirituality, we can prove to ourselves that within us there is light and sound, higher consciousness, and wisdom. We cannot convince others of this reality, and it would be of no value for anyone to merely believe in the words of another; the true test is to experiment and prove it to ourselves.

The science of spirituality is a science that anyone can practice. Just as we explore outer sciences to understand the world around us, we can also spend time daily in the inner science so we can solve the greatest mysteries of our life: who we are and why we are here.
